The goal and the card values

You and the dealer each get two cards. Number cards count face value, picture cards count ten, and an ace counts one or eleven, whichever helps. If you pass 21 you bust and lose at once. If the dealer busts and you have not, you win. A natural blackjack, an ace with a ten-value card, usually pays better than an ordinary win, but the payout ratio differs by table.

Check the table's stated payout before you sit; it affects the house edge.

Your decisions

You can hit to take another card, stand to keep your hand, double down to double your bet for one more card, or split a pair into two hands. Some tables offer insurance when the dealer shows an ace, which most guides advise against. In general, standing on high totals and hitting on low totals when the dealer shows a strong card is the logic behind basic strategy.

Live table features

In live blackjack, many players share a table with the same dealer, and each decides separately within a time limit. If you do not act in time, the table may stand your hand automatically. Some tables allow bets behind other seats. Rules, number of decks and dealer behaviour on soft totals vary, so read the table's help panel.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not chase a loss with bigger bets, and do not play because someone else at the table is winning. Avoid side bets until you understand them since many carry a high house edge. Keep a fixed stake and a total limit, and leave after a set time. Compare with baccarat if you prefer a game with no decisions, and read responsible gaming for warning signs.
