Roulette En Prison and La Partage Explained
Quick Summary
- La partage returns half of an even-money bet when the ball lands on zero.
- En prison holds the bet for another spin and may return it in full if it then wins.
- Only some tables use these rules, so read the table's rules panel.
- Neither rule makes roulette a winning game. They only soften the loss on zero.
You may have noticed that some roulette tables mention two French words in their rules: la partage and en prison. They are old customs, and they matter only for one situation, when the ball lands on zero. This article explains them in plain words with small examples. We are an independent guide, not KKFB. We do not know which tables use these rules, so please check the table you open.
The problem they solve
In roulette, bets such as red or black, odd or even, and high or low are called even-money bets. They pay one to one. But the zero belongs to none of those groups. When the ball lands on zero, an ordinary even-money bet loses. That is part of how the house earns its edge.
La partage and en prison soften that loss, only for even-money bets. Other bets, such as a single number, are not affected.
La partage
With la partage, if the ball lands on zero, you lose half of your even-money stake and get half back. A ৳100 bet on red would return ৳50 on a zero. It is simple and immediate: the spin is over and you know where you stand.
| Rule | Your ৳100 even-money bet on zero | What you end with |
|---|---|---|
| No special rule | Lost | ৳0 back |
| La partage | Half returned | ৳50 back |
En prison
With en prison, the bet is "imprisoned" for the next spin instead of lost. If your chosen colour comes up on that next spin, the stake is released and returned to you, without winnings. If not, it is lost. Some versions use a second step if zero lands twice. Rules vary, which is why the rules panel matters.
A ৳100 bet on red that goes into prison and then wins on the next spin returns ৳100 (not ৳200). If the next spin is black, you lose the ৳100.
Do they help?
Both rules reduce the house edge on even-money bets, so on average you lose less over many bets. But the edge is still there, and no betting pattern turns roulette into a winning game. Do not choose a table solely because it has these rules and then bet more. See our roulette guide and the live casino hub for more on the game.
A note on the history and the feel
These rules come from European casinos, and you usually meet them at French-style tables. Many people like la partage because the result is immediate. En prison is more dramatic, since your stake waits for the next spin, and some players find that waiting stressful rather than fun.
If you notice that the wait makes you want to bet more to "get it back", that is a sign to choose a table without en prison, or to take a short break. A rule that softens a loss is nice. It is not a reason to play for longer than you planned.
Finally, remember that the other types of bet on the same table remain unchanged: a straight-up number bet on a zero result is still just a loss.
Finding the rules
Live roulette tables normally have an info button or rules panel. Look for a mention of the zero and even-money bets. If it says nothing about la partage or en prison, assume it does not use them. We do not state which tables on KKFB do. Remember too that a bet can lose; set limits first and see responsible gaming for tips.

Your questions
What is la partage?
It is a rule returning half your even-money stake if the ball lands on zero. It applies only to those bets.
What is en prison?
It holds your even-money bet for another spin after a zero. If it then wins, the stake is returned without winnings.
Do all roulette tables use these rules?
No. Many tables do not. The rules panel at the table is the place to check.
Does la partage mean I am more likely to win?
No. It does not change the chance of a win, only what happens to your stake on a zero.
Can I use a system to beat roulette?
No betting system overcomes the house edge. Systems that raise stakes after losses can raise your losses quickly.
